C6 Corvette ZR1

No supercharged Corvette ZR1 has come close to going this fast in the mile, and it could go faster.

The C6 ZR1 has been out of production since 2013, but it is still one of the quickest, fastest and most powerful Chevrolet Corvette models of all time. In stock form, the LS9-powered supercar will cover the quarter mile in the mid-11-second range. More importantly for this discussion, the C6 ZR1 also offers a stock top speed of more than 200 miles per hour. However, with some upgrades, the supercharged Chevy will make much more power, leading to a much greater top speed.

The 2010 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 shown here has been heavily modified, but it still features the stock supercharger design. With owner Chris Wells at the wheel, this C6 ZR1 recently set the world record for top speed in the standing mile, hitting 230.592 miles per hour. No other C6 Corvette ZR1 has come close to going that fast with the original supercharger design.

Record Setting Corvette ZR1 Details

We had a chance to speak with Wells, who shared the details on this wicked 2010 Corvette ZR1.

Wells Corvette ZR1 Engine

This Corvette ZR1 is fitted with an all-aluminum Dart engine measuring 427 cubic inches. It is topped by a set of Xtreme CFM six-bolt cylinder heads and a Kong Performance 2.6-liter supercharger. The engine is fed by a Fore triple-pump fuel system and ID1300 fuel injectors, all of which are pumping E85. The incredible exhaust note is provided by Kooks headers and X-pipe, along with an Akropovic exhaust system. Finally, a Nitrous Outlet blower plate delivering a 300-shot helps this C6 ZR1 make monster power.

Wells Corvette ZR1 Engine

This car is built and continuously tuned by Shane Carey, owner of CT Performance in Gregory, Michigan. Wells points out that Carey has spent countless hours tweaking and tuning this build. Wells had CT Performance build this car to be a monster of a street car. He drives it regularly and it looks very much like an average C6 ZR1.  However, with the ability to hit 230 miles per hour in the standing mile, there is nothing average about this Corvette.

Setting the World Record

Wells previously set the world record for a supercharged C6 Corvette ZR1 top speed in the standing mile at 223 miles per hour back in July. On the weekend of October 2, he headed to the ECTA Horsepower Harvest at the Arkansas Mile. On a run that was far from smooth, Wells and his ZR1 were able to reset his own world record by a hefty margin.

You can watch and listen to the record run in the video below from the DDXAuto Instagram channel. Early in the run, the engine bogged a bit in second gear. There were traction issues in third gear and he ran into the rev limited a time or two. More importantly, the oil pressure began to drop dramatically on the big end, causing Wells to lift before the end of the 1.25-mile run. However, he went hard to the mile marker and in doing so, he reset his own world record.

Wells ZR1 Record

On the record run, Wells’ Corvette ZR1 was going 193.424 miles per hour at the half-mile mark. Of course, at the mile marker, he was traveling at 230.592 miles per hour, beating his old record by roughly seven miles per hour. The only C6 ZR1 to go faster in the standing mile had a custom turbocharger setup, rather than the supercharger.

Earlier in this event, Wells made a hard run through the 1.25-mile mark. On that run, he hit 234.558 miles per hour, resulting in his winning the “Fastest Corvette” award at the event, but his mile speed was a bit slower. Wells believes that he will be able to go even faster without any dramatic changes to the car. He believes that in the right conditions, he can get to 200 in the half mile. That would likely yield an even higher mile speed.

As mentioned above, this Corvette ZR1 sounds incredible, so crank up your speakers and enjoy!
