Haunted Road Trips: The Best Corvette Cruises for Halloween!

Corvette and Coffin

There are a lot of spooky places to visit, and they offer a great excuse for a haunted road trip. Here are a few favorite destinations.

One of the great joys of Corvette ownership is taking it on a nice road trip. You can visit national parks, or distant relatives, or a small beach town you always wanted to see. However, this is Halloween season, so why not spice things up with a haunted road trip? Maybe check out a few haunted houses, or ancient asylums. If you scare yourself a little too much at least your Corvette will help you get out of there fast.

We are Corvette enthusiasts but not paranormal experts. Our list is by no means a comprehensive collection of all creepy stops. We scouted out some locations in the four corners of the United States that offered up not just scares but something fun for the Corvette as well. Many of our suggestions take you around some great driving roads or racetracks or other attractions that are worth the trip. You will be in for both thrills and chills when visiting any attraction on our list. Pick your favorites, load up the Corvette and hit the road.

Northeast

Gettysburg National Military Park

Camo C7

We start out in the northeast region with the Gettysburg National Military Park. There is no shortage of haunted areas in and around the park. Home of one of America’s deadliest battles there are countless reports of strange vibes in the area. It is located in a beautiful area with a lot of wonderful driving roads nearby to let your Corvette stretch its legs. From here you can plot your course for about 130 miles to the east for your next stop on the tour.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Up next is the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. If you live anywhere near this area, you are already familiar with this place. Built in 1829, this was one of the most expensive prisons in the world. It was once home to such famous figures as Al Capone. Aside from the eerie ruins that are enough to give you the creeps the penitentiary is regarded as one of the most haunted places in America. Philadelphia may not have the best driving roads for your Corvette, but there are many historical sites to take in. Scare yourself silly and then take in some culture and a wonderful meal nearby.

112 Ocean Ave.

Orange and Black C8

Not familiar with that address? What if we told you it was located in Amityville, NY? The site of a gruesome murder scene the house was so haunted that new owners could not even make it a whole month before moving out in fear. You can’t enter the house as it is private property, but you can see it from the road which is creepy enough. When you are done with that you can spend a few days relaxing in the Hamptons.

Lizzie Borden House

Blacked out Corvette

The last stop on the northeast tour of the Halloween road trip is the famous Lizzie Borden house. This is the original house where the brutal double murders took place in 1892. The crime is still unsolved, but a common theory is that Lizzie killed her parents with an axe. The house is now a B&B and you can spend the night in Lizzie’s old room or the room in which her mother was found murdered. Creepy, but if it is your thing then go for it. Nearby there are plenty of spots to take your Corvette for a cruise. Check out the mansions of Rhode Island or head the other way and spend some time on Cape Cod.

Central / Southeast

National Corvette Museum

Sinkhole Corvette

Is the Corvette museum haunted? We do not think so. However, in February of 2014 a large sinkhole opened under the museum floor and swallowed eight historic Corvettes. We think that is enough to scare any Corvette owner. Plus, if you can’t find something Corvette-related to do here, then you just aren’t trying.

Bell Witch Cave

Custom Corvette Paint

Located just 60 miles south of the Corvette Museum is Bell Witch Cave. The cave is reportedly haunted by the Bell Witch. The famous horror film “The Blair Witch Project” was partially inspired by the Bell Witch legend. From here you will get to stretch the legs of your Corvette on the way to the next stop. Stop in Nashville, or head to Memphis if you prefer. Then continue south until you hit New Orleans.

LaLaurie Mansion

Jake

The owner of the LaLaurie Mansion tortured and killed the people that lived and worked in the mansion. It is said that ghosts of the victims remain, and their screams can still be heard. The mansion is in New Orleans. We don’t think you will have a problem finding something else enjoyable to do while in New Orleans.

Mountain / Central

Villisca Axe Murder House

Corvette engine cover

The name says it all, doesn’t it? In June of 1912 in this house in Villisca, Iowa eight victims were murdered with an axe. And now you can spend a night in that very house! Assuming you survive the night, enjoy some wide-open spaces on the way to Kanas City for some bbq on the way to our next stop.

Driskill Hotel

C7 with a mask

Located in Austin, Texas room 525 of the Driskill Hotel is well-known for being haunted. The ghost of the original owner is said to wander the halls. Two women, both on their honeymoons died in room 525 twenty years apart. Just 20 minutes away from the hotel is one of the best racetracks in America, the Circuit of the Americas. Make sure you stop there on your Austin trip.

Stanley Hotel

Corvette and Mountains

The Stanley Hotel was the inspiration behind “The Shining” and we don’t think we need to say anything more about that. Nestled among several beautiful mountain ranges this would be a wonderful area to explore with your Corvette.

West

Hotel Monte Vista

C7 prototype

Flagstaff is our next stop on this Halloween road trip. This Arizona hotel is known for the sounds of screaming infants in the basement, rocking chairs moving on their own, and other strange occurrences. The hotel is open, and you can book a room if you dare. From here take an hour and a half drive and check out the Grand Canyon National Park.

RMS Queen Mary

Orange and Black C8 Convertible

The Queen Mary is widely known as one of the most haunted places in America. You can stay on the ship and they offer ghost tours as well. The ship is docked in Long Beach, California. There is no shortage of Corvette things to do in southern California, but you must take the Pacific Coast Highway on your way to our next and final stop.

Winchester Mystery House

Jake Edition

The widow of gun magnate William Winchester commissioned the building of the house. She was fearful that she would be haunted by the ghosts of everyone killed by a Winchester rifle. She designed the house specifically to confuse and trap the spirits that would haunt her. That explains the 200 rooms, 2,000 trap doors, secret passageways and doors that open into walls. You can tour the house and then take your Corvette to explore San Jose, or maybe push on to San Francisco.

So, there you have it, our guide to having a ghostly time while enjoying your Corvette Halloween road trip. If you have other places you think we should checkout, please let us know in the Corvette Forum forums.
