Prince once penned a hit song about a fast woman in her little red Corvette. Though the song was inspired in part by his bandmate’s beater, it’s little wonder why he chose a Corvette in red to drive the point home. Red is the color of passion, of speed, of blood and life itself. The Corvette is a fast machine. Put the two together, and magic is abound.

And since 1954, any fan of America’s sports car could get their ‘Vette in a shade of red. Most years included two shades, one dark, one bright. With this in mind, here are the 10 reds which flow through our hearts like the Corvette flows through the open road.

Sportsman Red (1954)

The second year of the Corvette brought the first red to the table. Dubbed Sportsman Red, the shade originally turned up a year before on a few Chevy models as Target Red. It was also the only red available (a theme that would hold until the 1960 model year), and it’s a red that’s never been offered since 1954.
