Corvette Stingray to Pace the 2021 Daytona 500
Corvette Stingray is joined by the Camaro SS and Silverado 1500 RST in the big NASCAR weekend.
On Sunday, February 14, the 2021 Daytona 500 will be held at Daytona International Raceway and when the cars take to the track, they will be led by a uniquely painted Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. In addition to the LT2-powered C8 that will serve as the pace car for the “Great American Race”, a pair of LT1-powered Chevys will also work pace car duty for the big weekend. A Silverado 1500 RST will pace the field of the Camping World Truck Series on Friday and a Camaro SS will be the pace car for the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, leading to 1,370 horsepower of Chevy pace vehicles.
“Coming off of a successful 2020 on track in all three NASCAR national series, our drivers and teams are fired up and looking to put Chevrolet back in Victory Lane, starting at Daytona,” said Tony Johnson, director of Chevrolet Car and Crossover Marketing. “In addition to exciting green-flag racing, we’re really looking forward to showing off the Daytona 500 Corvette Stingray pace car and so much more for race fans Saturday during the ‘Live from Daytona’ broadcast presented by Chevy MyWay.”
Corvette Pace Car at Daytona
The Chevrolet Corvette has served as a memorable pace car in many major races across the United States, but the Daytona 500 is the crown jewel in the world of NASCAR “stock car” racing. The C8 is a legendary piece of Corvette history, so it makes perfect sense that a new mid-engine Stingray would lead the Daytona field. The 2021 pace car is painted Rapid Blue with black and red trim, as well as NASCAR and Daytona 500 logos.
The 2021 Daytona 500 marks the sixth time that a Corvette has been the pace car while being the 14th time that a Chevrolet has had the honor. This is the 63rd running of the race and a General Motors product has been the pace car in more than 50 of those races, with the vast majority being led by a Pontiac Grand Prix.
Camaro and Silverado
In addition to the Corvette Stingray serving as the pace car for the Daytona 500, both the Camaro SS and Silverado 1500 RST will lead fields of their own. The Camaro SS will handle pace car duties in Saturday’s “Xfinity Series’ Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300”. On Friday, the Silverado 1500 RST will pace the field for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ NextEra Energy 250. Each of these vehicles is painted a similar livery to the Corvette. The Camaro SS will also introduce the new Rapid Blue exterior paint option for 2022.
Chevy MyWay
Finally, Chevrolet will offer a unique behind-the-scenes look at different elements of Daytona 500 history on the company website. Beginning on Saturday, February 13 at 11am EST, viewers can learn more about past GM vehicles like the Firebird I concept and other GM-related NASCAR history, including a look at the Harley J. Earl trophy. There is even a segment that looks at how the production Camaro ZL1 compares to the Camaro race cars that will compete in the Daytona 500.
The 2021 Daytona 500 broadcast begins on Fox at 2:30pm EST on Sunday, February 14.
