At one time, this family heirloom of a C4 Corvette was the fastest naturally-aspirated Corvette in the world.
Cars have long brought families together, whether it be a parent teaching their child how to wrench, taking them out for cruise night, or ultimately passing down a beloved vehicle from generation to generation. Owning our parents’ cars allows us to keep their memory alive after they’re gone, which is exactly why YouTuber Fasterproms is giving this C4 Corvette a thorough redo.
But this isn’t just any old C4 Corvette, mind you. It’s actually a pretty famous car that many readers may already recognize. “My father passed away when I was 18,” the host says. “At the time I really didn’t appreciate it for what it was, but it is definitely something special. This thing at one time was the fastest naturally-aspirated Corvette in the world – from 1996 to 2000 it held that title. We call it the legend because the thing really did take down some heavy hitters at the time, like John Lingenfelter and John Hennessey.”
Thus, it’s obvious that dad’s C4 Corvette deserves to be preserved, for more than one reason. That process started with a little bit of tweaking, as well as a trip to the dyno, where it still laid down 520 horsepower from its naturally-aspirated 420 cubic-inch mill. However, some time passed before the crew began working on the car again as the shop got quite busy for a couple of months.
Now, the engine is out of the car and the team is working on making a new wiring harness, as well as replacing the car’s original and tired short block with a new, beefy bottom end. Along the way, they’ve done some painting underneath the car, touching up places that just needed a fresh coat or two. The heads also hit the workbench in the most recent clip detailing this process, receiving a little bit of work themselves.
So far, this C4 Corvette family heirloom project is coming along quite nicely, but the team at Fasterproms still has a way to go before it’s back on the track. Regardless, we never get tired of a good old-fashioned automotive tribute build, so you can bet we’ll be staying tuned as this project creeps toward the finish line.
