Hot Mods: Installing LED Taillights on a C5 Corvette!
HorsePower Obsessed reveals how a simple mod can improve the safety of your C5 Corvette and make it more stylish.
In his most recent video, Justin, a CorvetteForum member and YouTuber HorsePower Obsessed, demonstrates how C5 owners can swap their factory tail lights with a modern LED replacement. Even though its production ended almost 17 years ago, the C5 Corvette is still an exhilarating sports car. A good example can still deliver remarkable performance, but if you don’t want to take our word on it, just check out what Jay Leno has to say about the sports car.
Over the years, however, certain aspects of C5 have not aged well and need an update. The YouTuber claims that his recommended mod will not only improves the car’s styling but also make it safer to drive. The aftermarket tail lights are a Corvette Innovationz product and feature a halo that surrounds a cluster of LEDs.
The taillights are also accompanied by a relay that stops hyper flashing. The first step of the installation process involves disassembling the stock tail lights, which only requires unfastening eight Phillips-head screws. After unplugging the electrical connector and removing the factory bulb, customers can plug the aftermarket lights into the socket.
Justin shared his thoughts on the advantages of Corvette Innovationz’s LED tail lights, “benefits of the LEDs on the left are going to be that they’re going to be a lot brighter at night. People are going to be a lot more aware of whenever you are actually pressing your brakes, and those halos of course look super up to date and really make the car look cooler.”
Replacing the factory relay is a more elaborate process but only involves six steps. This requires removing the panel underneath the steering wheel, after which customers can install the new relay using the Corvette Innovationz T harness.
We also get to see the LED lights in action at night. “These are insanely bright. So, a lot brighter than the stock stuff. They look a lot more current because of the Halo setups,” said Justin. He further added, “If this car word to be made in 2021, I have a feeling this is exactly what these tail lights would look like.”
