GM CEO Mark Reuss Tweets C8 Corvette Z06 Pic After ‘Amazing Week’ of Nurburgring Testing
The C8 Corvette’s European vacation continues, this time with five Z06s and a mysterious widebody testing and flexing at the Nurburgring.
Despite vacationing in Europe since the start of August, the C8 Corvette’s had quite the productive outing. A pair of C8.Rs rolled into Le Mans, France for their first 24 Hours of Le Mans. The No. 63 C8.R finished second in class, the No. 64 landed sixth after mechanical problems. A tough go, but it did take a year for the C8.R to win its first Daytona 24. Thus, perhaps 2022 will be the ‘Vette’s year in France.
After Le Mans, GM arrived in Europe with its own group of Corvettes. The purpose? According to Corvette Blogger, the General is testing the upcoming 2023 Z06 at Europe’s other famous circuit, Germany’s Nurburgring.
“What an amazing week,” GM CEO Mark Reuss tweeted August 27; the account’s been set to private since. “So proud of this team. Those who know what these are and where this is at… well you know. Z comes to life… #furious.”
Attached to the tweet, a photo of six C8 Corvettes in their garage, each wearing their best camo to work on their ‘Ring skills. Five of them are, of course, the Z06s, including at least one base and one Z07-optioned prototypes. However, Corvette Blogger notes one particular ‘Vette’s wider than the rest of the group. The publication suspects this one to be the upcoming E-Ray, the first hybrid Corvette whose name replaces the Grand Sport moniker for the C8 Era.
The sextet of C8 Corvettes took advantage of a two-week testing window at the ‘Ring, which just concluded a few days ago. The group were surrounded by a film crew, who were likely there to capture whatever runs were made for Chevy’s Corvette: The Mid-Engine Revolution YouTube series. However, a couple of crashes involving BMW and Tesla test mules, plus the rain, squashed the Z06s’ hopes for a hot lap, per Road & Track.
That said, the hottest lap, the coveted ‘Ring time, takes more planning, time and money to make happen. As YouTuber Misha Charoudin noted, the C7 Z06 almost lapped the track under seven minutes. Perhaps soon, the C8 Z06 will be the first American machine to do it.
