1988 C4 Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette

This amazing example of a fully-outfitted C4 Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette might be the nicest one left.

Callaway’s iconic Sledgehammer is a rather famous vehicle that catapulted the tuner to the top of the Corvette aftermarket world, solidifying the company’s status as one of the very best. But lest we forget, the Sledgehammer was also the catalyst for the C4 Callaway Twin Turbo cars that were to come, which a small handful of lucky folks were able to purchase decades ago. This 1988 Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette that recently crossed the block at Collecting Cars is one of those few examples, and it’s a rather special find as well.

With just 22,900 miles on the clock, this Callaway Corvette remains in stunning condition and is one of very few still left on this earth. Wearing that unmistakable AeroBody kit made famous by the Sledgehammer, it’s also an icon of automotive styling, the kind of car that still turns heads everywhere it goes today, 30+ years after it was built. Finished in dark purple paint, this very much original Callaway Corvette is also devoid of any sort of damage or flaws on the outside.

There’s plenty of power on tap as well, as one might imagine, thanks to a heavily reworked 350 cubic-inch V8 that’s been treated to a pair of turbos and intercoolers. Output comes in at 390 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque, which was more than anything in this car’s day save for the Lamborghini Countach. Fed through a four-speed manual gearbox, this fortified C4 is quick even by today’s standards, too.

The tuned C4 rolls on its original 17-inch Callaway wheels, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires, which are brand new. This car is otherwise bone stock, inside and out. The gray leather interior shows some typical wear, but just looking at it transports us back to a different era thanks to that digital dash that seemed so futuristic when the C4 was originally revealed.

These days, you rarely see any sort of C4 Callaway Corvette, let alone one that was treated to the full monte of the company’s offerings during this era. With all of that in mind, it’s pretty surprising that this car only managed to garner $40,750 at auction. Sure, C4 Corvettes aren’t exactly valuable collectibles, but this example is quite special, having helped establish Callaway as perhaps the premier Corvette tuner on the planet.
