Gorgeous Big Block 1968 Corvette Heads to Auction With Just 12K Original Miles
This one-owner, low-mile gem of a 1968 Corvette was just treated to a restoration that has it looking good as new.
While some would argue that any big block Corvette is worth celebrating, sometimes, we come across truly special examples that deserve a bit more of the spotlight. That certainly includes this fine 1968 Corvette that’s set to cross the block at the upcoming Mecum Las Vegas auction, for a number of reasons. The biggest of which, truthfully, is the fact that it’s an amazingly well-preserved example with just 12k original miles.
The seller is reportedly the one and only owner of this 1968 Corvette and spent roughly $67,000 restoring it to its current condition prior to putting it up for auction. We imagine that they’ll easily recoup that investment, given today’s market and the fact that you rarely see 12k original mile vintage Corvettes these days, especially with a big block under the hood.
This C3 is a proper chrome bumper car that was built before increasing emissions standards began to kill off horsepower, but oddly enough, the auction listing doesn’t include a single picture of the engine, nor any details about which version of GM’s 427 it is. In 1968, buyers could choose between three different versions of that particular engine – RPOs L36, L71, and L88, producing 390, 400, and 435 horsepower, respectively, though the mighty L88 was grossly underrated from the factory. Like most, it is equipped with a four-speed gearbox.
We’re certain that more information will be added prior to this car crossing the block, but regardless of what lies under the hood, it’s a fine example of an early big-block C3. Low-mile, one-owner cars like this just don’t grow on trees, after all. Plus, it’s finished in a great color combination – black with a red interior, with a white soft top, and matching black hardtop to boot.
Though it would have been nice to see a car like this in original, unrestored condition, there’s no telling what sort of shape it was in prior to its restoration. Perhaps it had been stored outside and was in rough condition, with a torn-up interior and faded paint. Regardless, it is a lock to receive plenty of attention when it crosses the block in just a few days, seeking just its second owner in the last 50+ years.
