1957 Corvette Fuelie

One of just 240 produced, this 1957 Corvette fuelie is an older restoration that still shines bright today.

In the early days, the Corvette was nearly canned when it drew the ire of hot rodders for, well, lacking a bit in the power department. GM responded by giving its fiberglass sports car V8 power in 1955, but it wasn’t until the 1957 Corvette fuelie when things began to get serious. By adding Rochester mechanical fuel injection and Hi-Lift cams to its small block 283 cubic-inch V8, the 1957 Corvette fuelie managed to crank out 283 horsepower – an impressive figure for the time. And this gorgeous red-on-red example up for grabs at Bring a Trailer is one of the nicest examples we’ve seen in some time.

In total, GM sold just 240 fuelie Corvettes in 1957 out of a total production run of 6,339 units built that year. That low total can be attributed to the fact that adding fuel injection cost buyers an additional $484.20 – or around 15 percent of the car’s MSRP. Regardless, that makes these fuelies extremely rare and highly coveted collectibles in today’s world.

Fuelie Corvettes don’t get much better than this one, which is wearing an older restoration yet still shines like a polished jewel. That work included a repaint in its original red with red coves, which is broken up a bit by a white soft top. The car also comes with a red-painted hardtop, and on the outside, shows off what’s under the hood with its original “Fuel Injection” badges.

The interior is finished in a matching red hue with a white strip that breaks up the sea of red present on the dash and door panels, and looks near perfect, save for a few paint chips on the door thresholds. There are currently 66k miles showing on the odometer, though actual mileage is unknown. Considering how nice the car presents today, that sort of thing doesn’t really matter anymore, anyway.

Most importantly, this is a real-deal ’57 fuelie, as we can see from its stampings and extensive documentation. Easily one of the most beautiful cars ever produced, the fact that this C1 is powered by a legendary powerplant and was produced in tiny numbers makes it a notable offering today, and one that we imagine won’t sell for a discounted price when the hammer falls.
