Songsan Motors Wants to Build a Hideous Four-Door C1 Corvette Ripoff
A year after revealing its C1 Corvette clone dubbed the SS Dolphin, Songsan is back with a four-door version.
Chances are, you probably remember the Songsan Motors SS Dolphin that popped up at the last year’s Beijing Auto Show. Not because it was some sort of cool-looking thing, but rather, because it was a blatant C1 Corvette ripoff that also happens to look incredibly strange, with proportions that are all out of whack. Even though it was an obvious attempt at replicating the C1 Corvette, GM opted not to pursue the company legally, and now it’s back with an even more hideous four-door version of what it calls the SS Dolphin.
These patent images were discovered online by CarScoops, and preview the as-of-yet unnamed four-door version of the SS Dolphin, which if one can believe it, is even uglier than the two-door. Most of the design remains the same, but rather than lengthening the car to fit two more doors, it appears that Songsan Motors pushed the cabin forward, shortening both the front end and the front doors to squeeze in the pair of rear doors.
The result is a rather hideous-looking thing from the side, at least, and it clearly demonstrates why GM chose to never build a four-door version of its iconic sports car. The rest of the angles aren’t quite as bad, however. The front end features a new headlight design and black trim, versus the traditional chrome that was used on the two-door. The top may also be removable, judging by the top-down patent image, which means this could be a family-style convertible, which would be cool.
The patent didn’t mention any other specifics, including what will power this bloated Corvette clone. However, the SS Dolphin features a turbocharged 1.5-liter gas engine that’s helped out by a 16 kWh battery pack and electric motor, which supposedly gives it 62 miles of electric-only driving range.
We certainly understand the appeal of someone making a new/old Corvette, and there are plenty of us that would line up and plunk down the money if GM decided to do just that with the first-gen model. But this thing, well, it’s like one of those drawings that a kid. comes up with that we have to pretend is good, when in reality, it’s pretty, pretty bad.
