This 1966 Corvette convertible was converted into a race car back in the ’60s, but looks no worse for wear today.

Few would dare chop up a C2 Corvette these days and turn it into a race car, but back in the 1960s, such a move was perfectly acceptable, of course. But as is often the case with vintage racers, those cars rarely survived the test of time, winding up in the scrapyard or perhaps even converted back to stock. This 1966 Corvette convertible racer is a real-deal period build, however, which looks no worse for wear today after decades in storage. Now, this cool piece of motorsports history is up for grabs via Bring a Trailer.

For quite a few years, this 1966 Corvette convertible saw action in various IMSA and SCCA events before promptly being put into storage in the 1970s. The seller acquired it back in 2002 and proceeded to give it a fresh paint job and a good scrub, which is apparently all the old Corvette needed. There is no top, however, and the exterior is all business with a pinned hood, low-cut windscreen, side pipes, and timeless 15-inch American Racing Torq Thrust wheels wrapped with semi-slick Hoosier tires.

The interior is likewise spartan and built solely for racing purposes with a pair of fixed bucket seats, five-point harnesses, a partial roll cage, and a fire impression system. The glass, glass frames, and trim were ditched in an effort to save weight, while AutoMeter gauges provide additional ways to monitor what’s going on under the hood.

Originally an L72 427 car from the factory, this 1966 Corvette convertible was fitted with a 327 for B Production competition purposes, and still meets those specifications today with stock heads, lifters, valve sizing, and plug angles, as well as a Holley carb. With just 10 hours on it, the small block is ready to compete in some vintage racing events and is mated to a rebuilt M22 four-speed manual gearbox and limited-slip rear differential with 4.11 gears, while four-wheel disc brakes provide the stopping power.

With a full racing history and plenty of documentation to back it up, this real 1960s racer is certainly a cool find and looks like a fantastic way for someone to break into the increasingly popular world of vintage racing – for the right price, of course.
