This C6 Corvette ZR1 is plenty fast without going too far overboard and ruining its streetability.
Automotive enthusiasts are facing a bit of a dilemma these days as all-electric cars begin to slowly take over our roadways. While we’re obviously obsessed with gasoline and gasoline-powered engines, it certainly seems like there will inevitably come a day when those things have been supplanted by electric power, and that includes what motivates our beloved American sports car, the Corvette. Regardless, the wicked cammed C6 Corvette ZR1 featured in this recent video by AutotopiaLA is a great reminder that while there are EVs quicker than it out there in the world, they just don’t stir the soul like this pavement pounding beast.
The owner of this particular C6 Corvette ZR1, John, is generally a JDM guy, but even he couldn’t resist the old school magic of the car nicknamed “The Blue Devil” by GM itself. These cars made an astounding 638 horsepower at the crank from the factory and came equipped with a manual gearbox, making for a magical combination that doesn’t really exist anymore, and that’s why collectors are clamoring to scoop them up these days.
Regardless, John wasn’t content with leaving his C6 Corvette ZR1 alone, and has since added a smaller pulley for the car’s supercharger, a BTR Stage 3 camshaft, titanium valve springs, ARP head studs, and a flex fuel system that enables him to run E85. The result of those simple upgrades is an impressive 762 horsepower at the wheels, and as a result, the car “struggles for traction,” according to John. Not that this should come as a surprise to anyone.
Regardless, John admits that his build is perfect for the street, mostly because it isn’t too crazy. Oftentimes, we tend to get obsessed with extracting as much power as we can from our rides, only to wind up with a car that isn’t terribly fun to actually drive. That certainly isn’t the case here, as it’s John’s favorite such vehicle to use for that purpose. As our host points out, it’s still plenty dangerous in the wrong hands, but at least in this case, the owner definitely knows how to use the copious amounts of extra power his C6 is making.
