Role Reversal: Corvette Sales Have Far Outpaced Camaro Sales in 2022

Corvette Sales

Bucking the usual trend the significantly more expensive Corvette sales numbers are far better than the Camaro in 2022.

The Chevy Corvette is a dominate sportscar and wins nearly every competition it enters. And that winning streak extends to the sales figures. The folks at Corvette Blogger have reported that so far in 2022 Corvette sales are significantly higher than Camaro sales. This tells you a couple things immediately. The Corvette is one hell of a car. And the Camaro as we know and love it today is on the way out. The Corvette is a more premium and thus a more expensive product. Nothing against the Camaro, but that is a fact. And as such the less expensive Camaro typically far outsells the premium priced Corvette. But with the introduction of the C8 those sales trends have been turned on their head.

How dominate is the Corvette in the sales race? Well, in Q1 of 2022 8,811 Corvettes were sold compared to just 6,710 Camaros. In Q2 things got even worse for Camaro. There were 8,630 Corvettes sold from April through June. But just 4,545 Camaros were sold in that same timeframe. So, for the first half of 2022 the sales race looks like this. 17,441 Corvettes sold compared to 11,255 Camaros. That means that about 1.5 Corvettes are sold for every Camaro. Ouch.

Historical Sales

C8

This Corvette sales dominance is a very recent phenomenon. For years the Camaro outsold the Vette by double or even triple. Let’s look back at the five-year period from 2015 to 2019. In 2015 there were 33,328 Corvettes sold. That was a solid Corvette sales year, but that year 77,502 Camaros were sold. That is nearly 2.5 times more than the Corvette. Each year from 2015 to 2019 the story was much the same. In total during that five-year span there were 125,180 Corvettes sold and 317,376 Camaros sold. And that is basically what you would expect when looking at a Corvette that is about double the price.

Camaro Sales Slide

Camaro

Over the last few years Camaro sales have been tanking. As mentioned earlier 2015 saw 77,502 Camaros sold. That has steadily decreased every year since. In 2021 only 21,893 Camaros were sold. Why the decrease? Well, part of it can be chalked up to COVID and supply chain issues. And more focus was put into selling the more profitable C8 Corvette. In addition, it has been rumored that 2024 will mark the end of the line for the Camaro as GM follows the rest of the auto industry and builds more EVs. So, if you like the Camaro and want to grab a reasonably priced V8-powered sportscar, now would be the time.

Corvette Sales Spike

Corvette Sales

We don’t have to tell you that the C8 Corvette has been a smash hit. 2021 and 2022 will see Corvette sales far above totals from 2016 to 2020. And the Corvette sales so far have been with just the Stingray model. Once the Z06 hits dealers we would expect the total sales numbers to climb even higher. While it may be sad to see the iconic Camaro wind down, the future of the Corvette could not be brighter.
