GM Is Reportedly Working on a Corvette EV Sedan and SUV
Instead of a C8-based EV, GM is reportedly rolling out a Corvette EV sedan first, followed by an SUV.
Rumors of the existence of a Corvette EV and even a Corvette SUV have swirled for years now, and at this point, at least the former seems inevitable, while the latter has even been teased by General Motors itself. However, if a new report is to be believed, it seems as if GM is going in a couple of different, highly controversial directions in the future, as it will reportedly build both a Corvette EV sedan – not just a coupe or convertible – as well as the long-rumored SUV, too, according to Muscle Cars & Trucks.
Most recent rumors suggest that the Corvette EV will simply an an all-electric version of the existing C8 model and will launch by 2025, which makes perfect sense given the fact that the hybrid E-Ray is already in the later stages of development. However, this new report suggests that the Corvette EV won’t be happening until the sports car’s ninth generation – at least in coupe form – which is an abrupt about-face given the fact that GM is so keen on electrifying its entire lineup in the near future.
The other shocking claim in this report is that the Corvette EV won’t simply be an electric version of the regular car, but rather, a sedan, and that it will be due in showrooms by the middle of the decade. This new vehicle will reportedly be something in the vein of the Porsche Taycan, a more premium, upscale offering with blistering performance. Rather than wear the Camaro badge as many have speculated, this makes the prospect of a Corvette sedan a bit more reasonable from a business standpoint.
On the same token, the long-rumored Corvette SUV is also reportedly still in the works, even if it feels like this vehicle has been conjured up and canceled numerous times at this point. However, that model has reportedly been delayed, making room for the recently-revealed Blazer EV SS. The Corvette SUV would reportedly be a bit more upscale, however, as well as offer more performance, earning its Corvette badge in that regard.
GM has been considering expanding the Corvette brand for years now, and these moves would essentially accomplish that goal, making it more of a standalone brand rather than the one-trick pony that it has been for decades now. The big question is – if these rumors prove to be true – will the world embrace a four-door or crossover version of the beloved Corvette? Only time will tell.
