One of the most important and renowned automobile events in the country, the Concours d?Elegance of America, returns to the Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan on Sunday, July 28th. The Concours d?Elegance of America, is unique among other global concours events by being dedicated to the ?Genius of the Automobile,? celebrating beautiful, exotic, and historically significant automobiles and the people behind them whose designs and technology influenced the world.
Nine Corvette’s received invites to the historic event formerly known as ?Meadowbrook.? This year a category has been established in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the 1963 Split Window Corvette. Six corvettes will be featured in the 1963 Fiftieth Anniversary of the 1963 Corvette category, two Baldwin C3 Corvettes will be part of the American Muscle category and the new Corvette C7 will be one of the entries in the Supercar category. In addition, highlights of the event include cars from the historic Great Race, the first electric cars, Vintage NASCAR cars, ?Jet Age? Convertibles, Supercars, Detroit and Indianapolis Iron, and American Muscle Cars. The American Muscle Car category will be emphasizing hyper-muscle cars, from performance dealers such as Royal Pontiac, Nickey Chevrolet, and Baldwin – Motion Chevrolet. Eleven cars will represent the category and include such legendary cars as the Royal Bobcat GTO, a Camaro SS 427 built by Nickey and two Baldwin Motion Corvettes.
One of the featured dealer cars on display in the muscle car category will be the 1970 Baldwin Motion ?Maco? (to avoid confusion with GM’s Mako) Shark. Joel ?Mr. Motion? Rosen built several super Chevrolet muscle cars, most notable the Camaros, Chevelles and Corvettes, and is well represented in the Muscle Car category with two Baldwin Corvettes and three Baldwin Camaros. Rosen’s Maco Shark, was built in 1970 focused on capturing first place in every show entered. The converted 1970 Corvette has a diamond tufted interior, a one piece flip front end, louvered rear glass and a Lemans style gas cap. It was the highest priced Motion car ever built, exceeding $17K over forty years ago. This car was recently restored to its former award winning condition.
In the 1963 Corvette category there are six entries, three of them Z06’s. One of the finest cars on display is the Pro Team’s 1963 Z06, Big Tank, Split Window Coupe once raced by Ohio Chevrolet dealer and accomplished SCCA racer Dick Lang. During 1963 and 1964 this Corvette was one of the most successful race cars in its class. This Z06 was found in a barn not far from Lang’s dealership and has been documented and fully restored to its former glory. The ?tanker? Corvette is ready to race again following its restoration by Pro Team Corvette and Nabers Brothers in Houston at a cost of over $220K. The #85 red coupe is being shown courtesy of Pro Team Corvette (www.proteamcorvette.com) and has recently captured Best in Class, First Place, and Special Display awards at the 34th Annual Ault Park Concours in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Another 1963 race Z06 will also be on display, the #81 Z06 owned for the last 35 years by C.J.Titterington. Built in late February 1963 on the heels of GM’s ban on sanctioned racing, Alvin Forsyth Chevrolet in the metro Pittsburg area had to utilize the ?back door? to support the race car. The purpose built Z06 won several races in the East with driver Grady Davis. The car is shown as it raced in the 60’s and is one of the finest examples of a successful privately owned and entered competition Corvette.
The third Z06, A Daytona Blue split window ?tanker,? has also had a recent frame?off restoration. The car owned by Gregory Ornazian whose collector cars have won numerous awards and recognition. In addition to the Z06’s three other restored 1963 Corvettes will be on display in the category.
This year’s event Chief Honorary Judge will be Wayne Carini, automobile collector, dealer, consultant and star of his own television series “Chasing Classic Cars” seen on Velocity? TV.
In addition to Sunday’s main event there are numerous associated and supporting events, kicking off on Thursday, July 25th, with this year’s Automotive Hall of Fame (AHF) inductions. The AHF has been recognizing outstanding automotive achievement since 1940. This year the Hall of Fame will introduce for the first time the ?re-induction? of a past hall of fame member. In recognition of Harley Earl’s contribution to the Corvette, he will be the first member of the AHF to be re-inducted.
