Instructor Drives His 2014 Corvette Stingray Brutally at Sebring
While attending an open track session at Sebring International Raceway on Saturday, I had the opportunity to ride with Larry who was one of the instructors for Chin Motorsports, the organization which hosted the event. Larry was very popular this weekend as he was driving an Arctic White 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51 Coupe.
Larry’s previous Corvette was a C6 Corvette Z06 which had participated in over 100 track events. Larry says of all the Corvette Stingray Z51s built, hardly any of the owners will really “drive” the car to its limits on the track, which he thought was “just a shame” since it’s on the track where the 7th generation Corvette really shows its true high performance nature.
Larry drove his Corvette hard, diving into corners and allowing that 465 lb-ft torque from the LT1 to power down the straights. The Corvette had nearly 5,000 miles on the odometer and still has its stock Michelin tires and brakes. The Corvette was set up in the Sport driving mode with traction control off and our speeds reached upwards of 140 mph on the long back stretch before turn 17.
Things did get a bit interesting during the third lap around the track when your’s truly was blackflagged for “holding my arm out the window and taking pictures with a handheld camera” but you’ll see in the video that it never happened. We came into the pits and Larry diplomatically suggested to the track official that if I gave her my GoPro to hold, could we do another another lap and she agreed. Nice save, Larry!
The event by Chin Motorsports is a great way to get your Corvette on the track to experience its true performance. Check out their 2014 Schedule as they drive on tracks all across the country.
All in all, the the C7 Corvette Stingray is an incredible machine. The Active Rev Matching was really incredible and proved its full worth on the track. A big thanks again to Larry for the letting me experience a great car being driven on a racetrack by a fantastic driver!
