When the owner of a C6 Corvette noticed cigarette butts in his garage and car, it led to a startling discovery.

The Corvette has long been a victim of its own success in a way, at least in terms of how popular it is among thieves in addition to those of us that own and drive them. Such is the price of success, as they say, but theft is still a massive headache for Corvette owners, who must be diligent in terms of taking steps to make their cars at least somewhat challenging to steal. Regardless, it still happens every day, and we’ve heard our fair share of wild, humorous, and downright unbelievable theft stories, though few will ultimately top what went down with a C6 Corvette in Bedford, Indiana recently.

According to WBIW News, police responded to a call from the owner of the C6 Corvette after he noticed two cigarette butts sitting on the ground inside his garage. Problem was, he doesn’t smoke, and this discovery prompted him to double-check to make sure the doors of his C6 Corvette were locked just in case that’s what the person that left them there was scoping out. However, two days later, the man found two more cigarette butts in the cup holder of the Corvette itself.

At this point, the C6 Corvette owner was obviously a bit peeved, as we all would be, no matter what your thoughts on smoking are. Thus, he called police once again, who were able to run a DNA test on the butts and quickly discovered exactly who had left them. Law enforcement found the suspect at a local church, though he denied knowingly entering the Corvette and also refused to submit a DNA sample to compare against the original and possibly clear his name.

Turns out, the suspect already had another case against him that contained DNA evidence, so police were able to match that to the DNA taken from the cigarette butts. A warrant has since been issued for his arrest, as the owner is seeking compensation to cover the cost of replacing the car’s carpet, as it was burned by the butts. A truly strange tale indeed, but once again a good reminder to keep your doors locked and your garage secure, because there’s no telling who is admiring your Corvette from afar.
