Last Corvette Pulled from Sinkhole — Let’s Hope the Worst is Behind Us

The last Corvette has been pulled from the sinkhole, but about the only positive thing I can make of it is that we’re finally over this dreadful part of the ordeal.

Officials at the National Corvette Museum said the 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 is by far the most damaged of all the eight Corvettes swallowed up in Kentucky.

Donated by Kevin and Linda Helmintoller of Land O’ Lakes, Florida, the Mallett Hammer was valued at about $120,000 at one point, but I can’t even begin to imagine how much money it would take to rebuild it.

“It looks like the worst one … a lot of parts and pieces,” said Mike Murphy, CEO of Scott, Murphy and Daniel Construction, in a WLKY News report. “It took a lot of punishment from a lot of big rocks.”

If you are a glutton for punishment, you can spill a 55-gallon drum’s worth of tears on all eight of the damaged Corvettes on display at the museum until August. Personally, I’d rather wait and see the “before and after” photos when the cars are shipped back to Michigan to be restored.
