C8 Corvette Rental Car Driver Smashes Into Pole After Illegal Pass
This C8 Corvette rental car driver ignored both the rules of the road and the laws of physics with disastrous results.
Being in the exotic rental car business isn’t exactly a job for the meek, as it’s filled with frustrating and oftentimes headache-inducing incidents typically caused by folks that probably shouldn’t be driving fast cars in the first place. Just take Rob Ferretti of Gotham Dream Cars and the Super Speeders YouTube channel as an example, as he often documents some of the crazy things that his business incurs on a virtually daily basis. The latest unfortunately involves a C8 Corvette rental car and its driver, who learned the hard way why it isn’t a good idea to try and pass another vehicle on a double yellow lane stretch of road.
As anyone who’s ever taken a driver’s license test already knows, it’s illegal to pass vehicles when there’s a double yellow line in the road because, well, it isn’t safe. Generally, double yellow lines are painted around corners and other parts of the road where it’s just downright dangerous to do so, though in this case, the C8 Corvette rental car driver threw caution to the wind – albeit with disastrous results.
This particular C8’s Performance Data Recorder captured the whole thing, which is also how Ferretti was able to determine that the car was speeding pretty blatantly – traveling 91 miles-per-hour on a two-lane road with a speed limit of around 40-50 mph. The car that the Corvette was trying to pass even moved over toward the shoulder in an attempt to give him some space, but when he pulls back over, he loses control and proceeds to smash into a power pole, causing catastrophic damage to both the pole and the Corvette.
As Ferretti points out, things could have obviously been much, much worse. The Corvette driver could have smashed head-on with a car moving in the other direction, and as he was coming around a curve at the time, likely wouldn’t have had time to react. He also hit the pole a bit off-center, which presumably made the outcome of the crash a bit better. As for the car itself, well, it’s unclear if the insurance company will choose to total it out or repair it, but ultimately, this clip should hopefully at least serve as a reminder that even when you’re behind the wheel of a rental car, you certainly aren’t immune to both the rules of the road and the laws of physics.
