Engine Build Experience for Z06 Won’t be Available for All
It looks like the idea of being able to participate in the engine build for that new Z06 you ordered isn’t guaranteed even if you do have the extra cash.
Unlike the previous model, all consumers buying the new Z06 won’t be able to participate in Chevy’s build-your-own engine experience for the car when production revs up in 2015, according to an Edmunds.com report. Chalk it up to the fact that the powertrain for the new Z06 is now being built at the Kentucky plant in Bowling Green and the GM engine plant in Tonawanda, NY.
“This is where it gets tricky,” Chevrolet spokesman Monte Doran told Edmunds. “It depends on if your engine is going to be built in Bowling Green or Tonawanda.”
I’d say tricky might be putting it lightly for buyers who have been looking forward to the idea. Only the Z06 models being built at the Bowling Green plant will have an opportunity to participate in the hands-on experience where a GM technician helps the buyer hand-build his or her Z06.
Even more tricky, GM hasn’t decided what percentage of those LT4 engines will be built in Kentucky.
Then again, I guess you could look at it this way: if your Z06 engine build does happen to get slated for New York, you won’t have to worry about kicking out that extra cash. According to Edmunds, the build-your-own engine experience was a $5,800 option on the previous-gen Z06 and ZR1. If you fall out of the engine build experience, you’ve got extra cash to throw into your car for mods. Not a bad consolation, right?
