Drag Race Rematch: Joe Biden’s 1967 Corvette vs Colin Powell’s 2015 Corvette
Biden brought his 1967 Corvette to Jay Leno’s Garage for a rematch against Michael Powell in his father’s 2015 Corvette. It didn’t go well for POTUS.
Setting aside politics, the one thing CorvetteForum shares with President Joe Biden is a love for America’s Sportscar. Biden recently brought his beloved 1967 Corvette — a wedding present from his father — for an episode of Jay Leno’s Garage on CNBC. The episode mostly focuses on an electrified Ford concept truck. But, for long-time viewers, Leno staged a drag-race rematch between Biden, driving his C2, and a 2015 Corvette once owned by Secretary of State Colin Powell.
If you bought the previous episode (part of which is embedded below) back in 2016, then-VPOTUS Biden managed to beat Powell in a drag race between the two Corvettes. This year, Michael Powell took the wheel on behalf of, and to avenge, his late father, easily smoking POTUS off the line and all the way to the finish line. Powell was happy about the win, but it was definitely a bittersweet moment for both drivers.
That said, we give Biden credit for hauling his 55-year-old Corvette all the way up to 118 mph.
Now, these results aren’t much of a surprise. Assuming it’s still stock and healthy, Biden’s Vette features the 327 engine, making roughly 350 horsepower. A lot for the time, of course. But compared to Powell’s 455-hp LT1, victory was decided before the engine was even turned over. To add insult to injury, Powell’s Corvette was an automatic while Biden’s is a manual.
Driving up to 118 in his beloved Vette wasn’t the only cool thing to see on that episode, though. Leno put the President in the driver’s seat of an electrified 1979 Ford F-150. It wasn’t the Vette, but Biden enjoyed the ride. Leno made a comment about how Biden isn’t ever behind the wheel of a car, and with the secret service observing the whole thing, he said he genuinely missed driving. And with a 1967 Corvette like he has, who could blame him?
