Prosecutors Won’t Charge Police in Fatal Corvette Shooting

Prosecutors have decided not to file criminal charges against three Los Angeles police officers who shot and killed an unarmed Corvette driver.

The decision surrounding the incident, which was caught live on TV and covered here earlier, is particularly interesting given the fact that last year Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said the officers violated departmental rules.

The driver, 51-year-old Brian Beaird, a National Guard veteran, was shot after leading police on a high speed chase in in 2013, weaving his Corvette in and out of traffic. The pursuit and the shooting was captured on a live newscast, which Beaird’s 80-year-old father claims to have been watching.

Back in August, the Los Angeles City Council approved a $5-million settlement with the Beaird’s family, the largest payout the city had made in a police shooting case in at least a decade. But while that might make it seem violations had occurred, the prosecutor’s office had “insufficient evidence” to charge the officers involved in the shooting.
