Famous Half Corvette on Route 66 Is Getting a Much Deserved Restoration
This famous half Corvette has been around for nearly a decade, and now, it’s getting a makeover.
Back in 2013, a truly interesting and unique display was installed on a wall near the intersection of 7th and Main in Joplin, Missouri along the iconic Route 66 – a half Corvette of sorts, one that was designed to look like the second-generation version of the sports car. As the years have gone by, however, the sun and weather have wreaked havoc on this particular art installation, fading its paint job and leaving it looking a bit worse for wear. Now, however, the famous half Corvette is getting a bit of a redo, according to KSN News.
The special display – which is part of the city’s involvement with “The Mother Road,” is set to be removed from its resting place at some point during the week after Thanksgiving, but that’s a good thing in this case, as it won’t be going away forever. Instead, a local business dubbed Mafia Paint Shop will be repairing the damage it has incurred over the past several years, repainting it, and then reinstalling it on the wall that it’s called home for some time now.
This particular display is an important one in the city of Joplin, as it’s a critical part of one of two murals created by the local organization Images in Tile, which specializes in that sort of work. Back in 2013, it was commissioned to make two of them to commemorate the fact that the legendary Route 66 runs through town, and in fact, two alignments of the famous road intersect there.
Those special tile murals are dubbed “Cruisin’ into Joplin” and “The American Ribbon,” but it’s the 1964 Corvette lookalike that attracts the bulk of the attention, for obvious reasons. It’s a truly unique piece, and one that has garnered fame over the years for that fact, and also for helping the Route 66 Mural Park in Joplin become a bit of a popular photo op for those traveling through.
Pairing America’s original sports car with its most famous road – one that has facilitated its fair share of road trips over the years – is certainly appropriate, and we’re glad to see that this particular tourist attraction is getting a fresh coat of paint.
