The C7 looks good in pretty much any color, but the color Chevrolet is concentrating on most with its upcoming $439 million Corvette paint shop is green.

Yesterday, Chevrolet broke ground on the new environment-friendly, 450,000 square-foot facility that will be nearly half the size of the entire production plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Construction of the paint shop will kick off this summer and conclude in 2017. (Don’t worry – if you’ve ordered a new Corvette, production of it won’t be delayed.) When the facility comes online, it will feature:

-Dry Scrubber booths with a Limestone Handling System that will do away with sludge water and waste

-LED lighting for better visual inspections and reductions in energy usage

-Robots with electrostatic applicators for smooth finishes and optimally efficient paint transfers. They’ll save a quarter of the paint used and save the environment at the same time

-High-efficiency baking ovens that will yield improved paint finishes and use less energy

It looks as if Chevy will be as focused on its environmental impact as its paint jobs. What do you all think? Do you expect this new plant to generate better-looking ‘Vettes and less orange peel in the future?
