The racing C3 Corvette is somewhat of a peculiarity. Proudly carrying the torch of the C2’s road racing success, the C3 did so as well, but more often than not, in the hands of a privateer. One of the most famous, shown above, was Tony DeLorenzo’s L88 Owens-Corning Fiberglass C3. Winning a race is rather important, and that was a task completed by DeLorenzo’s car more than any other Corvette. Ever.

Many privateers followed suit, building their own C3 racers and campaigning them across the country. Though Delorenzo’s car was an L88, every flavor of C3 was raced. Convertibles were converted into speedsters, or had a hard top slapped on. Coupes were made into GT-1 cars or A/B-production SCCA racers. Even when converted into a race car, they never lost their timeless curves, and in some cases, improved upon them.

The C3 became the every-man Corvette racer. Comparative to the C2, racing a C3 was within reach to those a bit better off than average. Even today at a vintage race, the C3 is commonly the most plentiful model you’ll find out there.
