Porsche GT3 RS Battles C7 Corvette ZR1 at YouTube Callout Event
Two of the world’s greatest supercars go head to head on the quarter mile with unsurprising results.
In April, many of the most popular automotive YouTubers gathered at Cecil County Dragway for the first YouTube Callout of 2018 and the host of the DragTimes YouTube channel attended with a new Porsche 911 GT3 RS. In addition to offering viewers a chance to see what went on at the event, the host filmed a best-of-three grudge race battle between his borrowed Porsche and the 2019 Corvette ZR1 of StreetSpeed717.
YouTube Callout
This YouTube callout gives Internet celebrities a chance to go head-to-head with others in the real world while allowing their fans a chance to see the hosts and their vehicles in person. The events are packed full of YouTubers with high performance cars and in addition to the general racing program, there is time for planned grudge matches.
At the April 2018 YouTube Callout at Cecil County, the host of the DragTimes channel called out Mike from the StreetSpeed717 channel. Mike had several cars at the event, including his McLaren 570S and his built C7 Z06, but with his borrowed Porsche, the DragTimes host wanted a piece of the new 2019 Corvette ZR1.
GT3 RS Vs C7 ZR1
On paper, the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 should crush the Porsche 911 GT3 RS in a drag race. Both cars are rear-wheel-drive, but where the 911 has 520 horsepower, the ‘Vette has 755 horsepower. The Porsche does have three advantages over the Corvette – it weighs about 500 pounds less than the ZR1, the engine is in the rear, so it has more weight over the drive wheels and it has the lightning-quick PDK dual clutch transmission.
Would the weight difference, the weight distribution and the ease of the automatic transmission allow the Porsche to make up a 235-horsepower difference?
No.
The Racing Action
The Porsche and Corvette make three runs down the quarter mile. In each run, the 911 is being run with stability control off, the transmission is in sport mode, suspension is in comfort and the driver is using launch control. In reality, he would have likely been better off without launch control, as in each of the three runs, traction issues cause the system to pull power and that slows the 911 dramatically. However, the Corvette doesn’t just slaughter the GT3RS on each run due to the driver’s issues with the manual transmission.
On the first run, the Porsche has issues leaving the line and the ZR1 stomps the 911, even with a soft launch. On the second run, the Corvette gets away from the line very well and has a huge early lead when he misses a gear. As he struggles to get the car into gear, the Porsche blows by and takes the win.
On the final run, the Porsche driver redlights and gets a huge early lead. The Corvette quickly runs him down, but right below the finish line, another shifting mishap allows the 911 to cross the finish line first – but the red light start gave the win to the Chevy.
