If you miss the days when the insane C6 Corvette ZR1 was enough to shock the world, this one’s for you.
When Chevrolet revived the ZR1 nameplate in 2009, it wasn’t just some ceremonious celebration. Packing a supercharged, 6.2-liter V8, this new king of the hill produced an (at the time) absurd 638 hp. And just like that, blew everyone away. Back then, it was hard to put into words just how extreme the C6 Corvette ZR1 truly was. Everything about this car blew away any other ‘Vette you could buy, including its preposterous $100k+ price tag.
But now that we’ve been blessed with the even more extreme C7 Corvette ZR1, the older version looks pretty tame by comparison. And it’s much easier to hook and actually drive fast around a track. That’s progress for you. Still, if you’re a fan of the brutish C6 Corvette ZR1, you won’t find many cooler than this insane ride, which That Racing Channel recently got to take a spin in.
But this is no ordinary C6 ZR1, mind you. The power of this bad boy has been dialed up to levels that surpass even the mighty C7 ZR1. Basic mods, including headers, an intake, bigger throttle body, ported bits, and cooling modifications are all that’s needed to crank horsepower up past 800 at the wheels. It’s also done 173 mph in the half-mile with a slipping clutch, so it’s obviously fast.
A proper beast, for sure. Watching this C6 Corvette ZR1 make multiple rips is enough to make us reminisce about the good old days. The days when the “Blue Devil” was enough to shock the world. No giant rear wings or fancy modern traction aids needed!
