Mid-engine C8 Corvette debuted last week and we were there to capture every second of the event.
On July 18, the C8 Chevrolet Corvette made its grand world debut at a private event in Southern California and as you might expect, Corvette Forum editors were on hand for the big night. Although we had a good idea of what the new Corvette looked like ahead of the debut thanks to leaked images, the event in Orange County brought us all of the key details that we all wanted to know.
We already brought you a look at the key details from the debut of the Porsche slayer, which was followed by a detailed look at the insanely-low pricing, plus an in-depth look at the ups and downs of the C8 Corvette. And now, we decided to wrap it all up in a nice package with the exclusive on-the-scene video below, followed by more details about our favorite new Corvette.
2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray: Comprehensive Coverage
Key Numbers
If you are looking for a broad overview of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, this is the piece for you. In this write-up from Corvette Forum Editor Jake Stumph, you will find all of the key information that was announced at the debut, including the horsepower and torque numbers, details on the Z51 package, a rundown of the interior layout and a quick walkthrough of the drivetrain details. Stumph also touched on the pricing and how the starting number will make the C8 considerably less expensive than the Porsche 911 with which the new Stingray will compete.
Of course, there are also plenty of pictures of the new C8 Corvette from the debut event.
Pricing Breakdown
Next up, Corvette Forum Contributing Editor Derin Richardson discussed how Chevrolet managed to price the C8 Corvette so damn low. While the pricing is sure to climb as you begin adding options, the company has promised that the new Stingray will start below $60,000. Many people wondered how on Earth General Motors designed an all-new, mid-engine architecture with a new engine, new transmission and new everything else with a price that is only slightly more expensive than the C7 Corvette Stingray.
Richardson explains that costs were kept down by developing the LT2 from the LT1 and by sticking to one transmission, excluding the manual from the C8 and offering only a dual-clutch automatic. Furthermore, GM President Mark Reuss has said that Corvette will garner an expanded lineup in the future, also allowing them to stratify cost.
“A lot of what you see here leads to a portfolio of things that happens, just like there’s a portfolio of Corvettes today. We’ll have a portfolio like that for Corvette as we expand,” he said.
C8 Pros & Cons
Finally, Stumph ran through everything that Chevrolet did right and wrong with the 2020 Corvette Stingray.
The pros in this piece were plentiful and that makes sense, as the C8 Corvette is pretty spectacular. Stumph praises the exterior design, the interior layout including the buttons running along the center console, the new LT2 engine and the sub-$60,000 price tag.
As for the cons, the only negative thing that Stumph had to say about the new mid-engine Stingray is that it does not come with a manual transmission, which is blasphemy to many people.
