Corvette on display at recent Barrett Jackson Las Vegas is the placeholder for actual VIN number 1.
Next January, the right to own the very first C8 Chevrolet Corvette production unit will be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in Arizona, but leading up to that event, the company is displaying a different mid-engine ‘Vette at other auctions. Earlier this month, the world renowned auction company held an event in Las Vegas and the car being introduced as the first C8 Corvette production model was on display.
CorvetteForum member “docprego” was at that event and he took the short walkaround video above of what he believed was C8 production unit number one, sharing it to a thread in the forum. This car has a VIN ending in 5000001, suggesting that it is the very first production C8 Corvette, but it is actually a sellable pre-production model that will eventually end up at the GM Heritage Center in Metro Detroit. As we learn in this thread, the actual first production unit will have a VIN ending in 5100001 and it will be customized to the tastes of the person who wins the auction next January – likely NASCAR owner Rick Hendrick.
VIN #1 Introduction
When the OP shared his video of the white C8 Corvette on display at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas, he simply explained what he saw and where.
Went to Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas tonight where production vin 001 of the 2020 Corvette Stingray was on display.
At first, members discussed the color and possible trim level, with some people believing at first that it was a 1LT, including “Redc7z06”.
Looks like just a 1LT low end model which seems a little strange for being #1 and for an auction.
While “BeastBoy” pointed out that it was at least a 2LT.
It’s at least a 2LT it has the rear mirror camera.
“BahamaTodd” put that discussion to rest, pointing out the blue interior of the 3LT package, which was later reinforced by the OP.
It’s definitely a 3LT. I took a good look inside.
A short time later “Vegas Sam” shared pictures of the car with the top off, clearly showing the blue-trimmed cabin.
Is It Really Production Number One?
The first member to question whether or not this white Corvette was really the first production C8 was “capevettes”.
Is that actually serial #1? Since production doesn’t start until December, that may be a pre-production car they are using for the auction, with the winning bidder getting the actual car to be produced at a later date.
“DSOMrules” pointed out that it does have a VIN ending in 000001, which had been shown in pictures from the event.
It IS VIN # 000001, and is the first saleable car that meets all production specs (as opposed to the EX VIN test cars.) The VIN plate has been photographed.
Could GM start a new VIN series for the first actual production car, creating a new VIN 001? Perhaps.
Finally, “Jeff V.” explained that this car has a 000001 VIN, but it is not actually the first production units.
Zymurgy pointed out in a different thread that regular production as opposed to this pre-production (but still saleable) car would have a different VIN sequence. So this car is 5000001 and a regular production car would be 5100001.
It’s still pretty confusing, and I wish GM and/or Barrett would clarify this point, especially when they’re actively displaying this white car.
