C8 Corvette Meets the Wall in Detroit
It’s no secret that the mid-engine monster isn’t exactly suited for winter, and this C8 Corvette lost to mother nature on the freeway.
It wasn’t all that long ago we saw the first crash involving the new mid-engine C8 Corvette. In that case, a C8 lost to an SUV on a California canyon road. Unfortunately, another C8 Corvette has joined the list.
The Drive brought this sad pre-production incident to our attention in a recent article. It seems that the very first Michigan snowfall was all it took to take this beauty out, and we can only imagine the explaining to the higher-ups at Chevrolet that took place afterward. Luckily, from the angle in the clip posted on Instagram by Corvette enthusiast Detoxx03, the damage doesn’t look too severe. Still, it should serve as a warning to upcoming C8 owners. You should probably be careful of slippery conditions in these things.
While GM employees are out having fun with their C8 Corvettes (when they aren’t getting crashed), buyers are still waiting on deliveries of theirs. The GM employee strike has furthered the estimated delivery dates and delayed production. GM has even announced they’re taking on temporary employees to produce the new Stingrays. Hopefully, then, the production models won’t be meeting a similar fate to one lost in a winter wonderland.
However, Chevy is maintaining that despite the strike delays, the C8 Corvette will officially launch in February of 2020. Hopefully, those with outstanding orders can keep their patience, because from our end the wait sure looks pretty worth it.
We can’t fault the driver entirely, though. With the insane performance figures on these beasts, a few sacrificed examples are unavoidable. With zero to sixty times under three seconds, and various car reviewers touting the C8’s incredible handling characteristics, we all know there will be a handful of those that are a little too confident behind the wheel. It’s also worth keeping in mind that this is not to be the most potent C8 available. Rumors of a 900 horsepower hybrid ZR1 are already floating around. Put that much power in the wrong hands, and things could get ugly.
Overall, as unfortunate of a loss as this is, it was likely unavoidable. We can’t imagine GM is letting just anybody drive these pre-production models. We’ll just put good faith in the driver having done everything they could to stop the accident. Hopefully, they don’t lose sleep (or their job) over it!
