Update: Chevrolet Says the 2020 Corvette is NOT Sold Out

Turns out Chevy actually sold out C8 ‘pre-orders.’ And since pre-orders aren’t final sales, you may still be able to get a 2020 Corvette.

With all of the buzz surrounding the 2020 Corvette, you might imagine that it’s pretty difficult to get your name on the list to buy one. In fact, we recently wrote about someone who was selling their reservation on eBay for a premium price.

It seems like every Corvette owner out there knows someone who has reserved a C8. Those lucky friends will be among the first to get the newest iteration of America’s sports car. Chevrolet is even hiring temporary employees to fill orders.

Earlier this week, Barry Engle, GM’s North American president, even told MotorTrend on record that the 2020 Corvette was sold out. However, things aren’t always as they seem.

According to Roadshow, the 40,000 2020 Corvette pre-orders on record don’t actually represent sales, at least not yet. While working to begin production at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, GM is also working with dealers to convert those pre-orders into final sales. Keep in mind, those pre-orders required absolutely no monetary commitment to General Motors.

Several folks who put themselves down for pre-orders will likely back out. In addition, the delay in production caused by the recent UAW strike may discourage some would-be owners. In other words, it may still be possible to snag a pre-order from someone who wants to dump theirs.

Additionally, after the pre-orders have been fulfilled, there’s nothing saying that Chevrolet won’t build additional Corvettes to meet demand. You’ll just have to wait a bit longer for your C8.

The 2020 Corvette launch is very important for General Motors. There’s an incredible amount of money tied up in development, production, and marketing. We doubt that they’ll turn away customers at the door, so to speak.

Our parents taught us that patience is a virtue. For those with existing pre-orders, the wait is already pretty long. The earliest pre-orders will have to wait until at least March. For the rest of us, we may miss the summer driving season. From what we’ve seen, though, the wait will be well worth it.
