Z06 Blue Devil

It’s not street legal, but the Blue Devil, GM’s first C6 Z06 was built to conquer race tracks and scare automotive journalists.

The saddest thing about automotive development is that big car companies like GM are forced to destroy cars. Significant and often important cars. Some are destroyed for NHSTA tests to ensure they are safe, and some are destroyed after they having the wheels driven off of them in the development process. But some escape this fate. The Blue Devil Z06 you see here is one such car.

This C6 Z06’s birthday is February 4, 2005. Shortly after rolling out of Bowling Green, Kentucky, GM wired the car for extra sensors and instruments. Special racing seats with harnesses were added for safety, along with a fire suppression system. The car was then promptly shipped off to Europe for testing. On the German Autobahn, Tony Rifici topped 200 miles per hour.

Long-time Corvette racer Jan Magnussen then bagged a 7:42.99 Nurburgring lap time. Magnussen also signed the center console and took journalists out for thrill rides. These rides cemented the Z06 in our psyche with that now-famous airborne photograph. Back on familiar soil, Johnny O’Connell did development testing at Virginia International Raceway. Considering that’s this Z06 can never be officially registered as a road car, its 20,000 miles were all very hard miles. We love it.

And amazingly, you can buy it. The Connecticut dealership selling it, GT Motor Cars, doesn’t have a listing price for it, so we did some digging. The car’s last known value according to Road & Track is $50,600.00 when it sold at auction in 2009. What could it be worth now? Ten years on, the value for C6 models is still on the low end, but that’s for regular C6 Corvettes. Being the very first C6 Z06, CarBuzz is reporting the asking price for this car is $80,000 dollars. Keep in mind the first C8 Corvette is expected to fetch high dollars at auction, and the first L88 was recently bid up to $1.8M. We think $80,000 isn’t all that much. You can be sure someone is willing to pay a high price to have a car with Blue Devil’s pedigree.
