C8 Corvette Test Mule

Some strange and interesting features make these C8 mules stand out even if you ignore their insane camo jobs.

The C8 Corvette coupe and convertible have been unveiled for some time now, and yet, we’re still seeing a slew of mules out on the roads recently. And that can mean only one thing, of course – there’s a hotter, more exciting version of the new mid-engine wonder right around the corner. The general consensus would tell us that it’s the Z06, which is rumored to pack a sweet-sounding flat-plane crank V8.

Now, we’re not sure if these latest images from Instagrammer Corvette C8 Centurion are of more C8 Z06 mules. But they sure do have some interesting features. Like that tube hanging off the back, for starters. Does that serve some kind of functional purpose? Or are Corvette engineers just playing games with us at this point? Honestly, there’s no telling.

The exhaust pipes on one of the mules are also quite strange, with a 2-in-1 design that looks pretty unfinished. We’re guessing that GM is purposely trying to disguise what lies under the hood here. Unfortunately, the spy photographer, in this case, didn’t manage to secure any shots through the rear glass, which was actually uncovered. Not that engineers likely left the engine itself out in the open, of course. That would just be too easy.

Otherwise, these mules look pretty much like regular C8 Corvettes. From what we can tell despite the heavy camo, of course. Heck, they’re even wearing standard-issue wheels. But we have to imagine that there’s something going on with that Back to the Future-esque mule underneath its dirty disguise. Perhaps a 600+ horsepower, flat-plane crank V8? Or maybe something even more interesting like a hybrid system? The only good news is that at this point, we shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out.
