Hennessy Performance Sets 205 MPH C8 Corvette Speed Record
Hitting 205mph requires a spoiler delete and access to a closed course, but maybe next time they won’t pick such a bumpy road.
Corvette Forum vendor Hennessey Performance has been on a roll lately, literally and figuratively. After pitting the C8 Corvette against a Dodge Charger Hellcat and Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 (see below), the HP team decided to set the C8 Corvette world speed record. The historic run took place at the Continental Tire Proving Grounds in Uvalde, Texas on May 8 with driver John Heinricy behind the wheel. (And YouTuber Stradman riding shotgun.)
Watching the cinematic video, a few things struck us. First, it’s not a surprise that they decided to remove the C8’s spoiler to reduce drag; things that make a car a great road-course weapon don’t always help with top speed runs or drag racing.
But we were shocked to see the condition of these particular proving grounds. At 150-plus mph, even small bumps become both dangerous and exaggerated, but Heinricy showed off some serious skills controlling the C8 at the upper limits as the road jostled him and his passenger. It’s a good reminder of why it’s so important to do high-speed driving in controlled non-public environments.
