One man wanted to be the first in Norway to own a C8 Corvette, and that privilege certainly cost him a premium.
Those that have looked into the process of importing a vehicle from another country already know that this typically isn’t a cheap process. There are many expenses involved with such a venture, including things like fees, taxes, and shipping, that often make it cost prohibitive. Then there’s the insane amount of paperwork involved, not to mention legal hoops to jump through. But a seemingly car crazy Norwegian man recently jumped through all of those hoops and paid a world record price for the privilege of owning a C8 Corvette.
That man is Ståle Pettersen, who was determined to own the very first C8 Corvette in Norway, regardless of cost, as he explained to Broom the day he picked it up. “I hardly slept last night, so this is definitely a big day for us. As far as we know, this is the first car in Norway. It just makes everything extra exciting,” Pettersen said. A shop dubbed Carfreaks worked with Norway Delivery to import the car from a U.S.-based dealer, which embarked on a four-week trip across the Atlantic.
Problem is, the privilege of owning the first C8 Corvette in Norway didn’t come cheap. In fact, it set Pettersen back a whopping $277,966. According to him, much of that jaw-dropping figure can be blamed on Norway’s incredibly high tax rates and gas guzzler fees. It’s an even tougher pill to swallow when you consider that Pettersen could have saved himself a ton of money by simply waiting until the second half of 2021, when European deliveries of the C8 are scheduled to begin.
Being the first at anything typically comes at a cost, however, and that’s certainly true in this case. Regardless, Pettersen doesn’t seem to be feeling any buyer’s remorse. He was able to drive the car home two hours from the port in Oslo to Loten, and came away quite impressed. The only problem? Even the best Norwegian highways don’t provide a suitable venue on which to explore the C8’s limits.
The fact that this C8’s new owner is pleased with his purchase is really all that matters, but we can’t begin to fathom spending this much money on the car. Heck, we scoff when dealers here in the U.S. add any sort of markup to the newest Corvette. And while European customers will undoubtedly pay more than we do for the car when it launches there next year, it most definitely won’t be McLaren-type money, at least.
