One of our favorite online time-wasters is watching old MotorWeek clips on YouTube. Beginning in 1981, MotorWeek beamed into millions of living rooms across America thanks to the magic of public television.
Over the years, host John Davis has slid behind the wheel of everything from Subarus to Sterlings to tell American consumers which cars are worth their hard-earned dollars. Davis, a Corvette owner himself, has tested several iterations of America’s Sports Car. Here are ten of our favorites, in no particular order.
1989 Chevrolet Corvette
This recently-uploaded episode is interesting because it reviews the base L98-powered Corvette in the context of the 1990 ZR-1. Davis had good things to say about the new ZF 6-speed manual, which was a major upgrade over the Doug Nash 4+3 gearbox used in 1984-1988 manual Corvettes.
As always, the C4 received praise for its handling, braking and acceleration. While less impressive today, the C4 put up some seriously good numbers back in the late 1980s. Things would only get better from there, with the vastly superior LT1 replacing the torquey L98 just a few short years later.
