Which Straight-Piped Corvette is the Loudest — C5, C6, or C7?
This trio of straight-piped Corvette models are all ridiculously loud, but there is one clear winner in the department of sheer volume.
No matter which type of performance (and in many cases, even non-performance) vehicle you’re talking about, exhaust systems have long proven to be one of the most popular modifications owners make to their rides. This makes perfect sense given the fact that a lot of sporty vehicles come from the factory with restrictive exhaust systems that can be a bit muffled in some cases, robbing them of volume and a bit of power. On the extreme end of the spectrum, we have folks that simply cut off cats and mufflers, or what we call “straight-piping” them, and that is the case with all three Corvette models in this video from Exhaust Addicts.
This particular clip is focused around a C6 Corvette that’s been modified specifically for drifting, and as a result, things like mufflers and catalytic converters just aren’t necessary. This C6 is equipped with long tube headers, along with a three-inch exhaust that utilizes an X-pipe layout, ending with quad-tips that are four inches in diameter. It’s insanely loud as a result, with our hosts measuring a peak of 126 decibels in their official testing – a truly ear-bleeding result.
After that, we’re treated to a side by side comparison that kicks off with a modified C5 Corvette, which nearly matches the C6 with 122 decibels of V8 glory. Finally, we’re treated to the audible glory that is a 1,000 horsepower C7 Corvette, which hits 130 decibels – a truly insane figure that’s more than enough to draw the ire of one’s neighbors, not to mention plenty of attention from everyone within a mile-plus radius – including the police, most likely.
It’s unclear what sort of mods these Corvettes are packing – aside from the drift build – but they’re all equipped with long tube headers and straight-piped exhaust systems at least, with pretty equal results in terms of sheer volume. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea – after all, many of us don’t really see the point of such ridiculously loud exhaust systems – but it’s still interesting to hear just what each of these Corvette generations is capable of doing in terms of creating ridiculous amounts of noise.
