The True Story Behind One of the Craziest Corvette Crashes in History
One of the craziest Corvette crashes we’ve ever seen happened back in the 1990s, and it’s truly amazing that the driver survived it.
It’s fair to say that there have been more than a few Corvette crashes over the years, which is to be expected for any vehicle – let alone one that’s known for providing owners with lots of performance. Many of the crashes we’ve seen caught on film range from humorous to horrific, of course, with the more extreme cases involving Corvettes smashing into buildings and even being sliced in half by various types of objects. However, few Corvette crashes can compare to one that happened in Buckeye, Arizona, back in 1997.
It was then that Jared Fitzgerald stole a C4 Corvette from a dealership and proceeded to lead police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of up to 165 mph – among the highest law enforcement in that area had ever seen. As one might imagine, that type of chase doesn’t typically last long – most of the time, the driver’s skills aren’t quite up to snuff, especially when they’re trying to navigate traffic, and that was precisely the case here as well.
As we can see in footage from this wild scene, Fitzgerald managed to rocket past a couple of semi trucks on the shoulder of the highway with police on his tail, but eventually lost control and smashed into the back of another one – leading to a horrific looking crash that one may assume ended with a fatality. However, shockingly, Fitzgerald managed to walk away from the carnage unscathed, with no injuries to report.
Watching the whole thing in slow motion clearly shows just how lucky Fitzgerald was, as the driver side of the Corvette smashed into the trailer ahead, at which point pieces of the car came flying off. The C4 itself proceeded to tumble through the desert in different directions, at which point we can see that Fitzgerald was ejected from the car during this whole process – though someone, he didn’t suffer a single cut, let alone any kind of major injury.
In an interview that occurred sometime later, Fitzgerald admitted that he was just trying to reach a nearby city, where he thought police would be forced to end the chase and he would be able to escape. That obviously didn’t – and wouldn’t have – happened, but the ensuing footage of that scene will forever live as one of the craziest Corvette crashes we’ve ever seen, and perhaps the craziest of them all.
