I
thought I’d share a ”How-To” regarding an LT1 to LT4 instrument
cluster R&R
Here’s what we’re doing…

Tools
you’ll need:
– Torque wrench (in/lb)
– Torx bit set
– Phillips
head screw driver
– 7, 10, 15mm sockets w/ratchet
– 6” ratchet
extension
Before doing the job, it would be a good idea to
disconnect the negative battery cable. The service manual does not
stipulate this, but calls for disabling the airbag system (which can be
done by pulling two fuses from the fuse panel). Simply look on the fuse
cover diagram for their locations.
Here’s the drivers side knee
bolster that has to come down. It’s held in place by two torx screws
on the left by the door and three 7mm screws (one on the left, right, and
bottom).

With
the knee bolster down, remove the courtesy light and diagnostic connector
(7mm).

Next,
remove the lower trim panel. It’s held in place with four 10mm bolts.
Make sure to pay attention to how the lip fits into the bracket for the
reinstall. Be careful with the lower bolt on the right, it’s very easy
for it to fall down inbetween the carpet panel and the body (don’t ask
how I know…).

Once
the lower trim panel is down, it’s time to remove the steering wheel
column support bracket. It’s held in place with two 15mm bolts. You
may want to get something to support the steering wheel when you remove
these bolts.

Next,
remove the four phillips head screws holding the bezel to the instrument
panel. Carefully pull the bezel from the panel housing (watch the top of
the bezel). Here’s what the job looks like so far…

Now
that the bezel is out, you’ll have complete access to the four 7mm
bolts holding the cluster in the instrument panel. Here’s where
you’ll need the 6” extension when removing/installing the top bolts.

Once
the bolts are removed, carefully pull the cluster straight out. It will
disconnect from the instrument panel housing at the left
rear.

Installation
is the reverse of removal. When installing the new cluster, be sure to
gently but firmly seat the new cluster. Torque the steering column
support bracket bolts to 20 lb. in.
