1972 Corvette Stingray Overview

The 1972 Corvette Stingray was a part of the C3 design group
of Chevrolet Corvettes. The terminology “C3” refers to the fact that the
1972 design was a part of the third major overhaul of the appearance
and functionality of the Chevrolet Corvette. The C3 designation remained
in place from 1968 up through 1982; as a result, the cars that
Chevrolet built under the Corvette name during this window of time all
bear a resemblance to each other in terms of overall design. Therefore,
the 1972 Corvette shares more in common with other Corvettes from the C3
group than those that were built prior to 1968 and after 1982.

Changes Specific to the 1972 Corvette Stingray

Although the 1972 Corvette Stingray is similar to the model years
that immediately preceded and followed it, it does have at least one
feature that sets it apart from those vehicles. In 1971, Chevrolet
introduced a new engine compression system into the internal structure
of the Corvette Stingray. The result was that the vehicle was able to
operate under lower-grade and different types of gasoline. However, as a
negative side effect of this change, the overall horsepower
capabilities of the Corvette decline. The 1972 model of the Corvette
Stingray is unique for having among the lowest horsepower ratings;
generally, the maximum horsepower of this particular model was around
200 bhp. Following the 1972 model, Chevrolet continued to experiment
with new engine compression systems and increased the horsepower once
again.

Design Specs for the 1972 Stingray

The 1972 Stingray is a coupe that retains many of the design and
aesthetic components of Corvettes that were built up to 10 years prior.
The car features a full width rear window which is a change from other
Corvettes that were built in prior years. The engine is 5.7 liters in
capacity.

Target Market

The 1972 Corvette Stingray was a sports car that was designed for
both impressive driving capabilities and sleek aesthetic. The vehicle
does not have ample room inside and has little to no storage space. The
result of this fact is that the Corvette Stingray from this model year
is not a good vehicle for families or anyone who regularly transports
more than one other person. Nonetheless, the power and excellent design
of this car have ensured its lasting appeal over the decades.
