From the sound of it, that LT4 engine powering the new Z06 is one of hell of a monster. In fact, Jordan Lee, chief engineer for the new Z06 engine, says the LS9 is no match for the LT4, according to a Wards Auto report.

Lee’s exact words? “The LT4 makes the ZR1 feel sluggish.” Yup, “sluggish,” which says a lot considering the engine still holds GM’s record for the quickest turn of “The ’Ring,” posting a 7:19.63 in 2012.

GM’s chief engineer goes on to note that the 6.2-liter LT4 V8 powering the new Z06 makes 457 lb-ft of torque off idle and 627 lb-ft at 2,800 rpm. The engine also holds 90 percent of its peak torque (592 lb-ft) from 2,500 to 5,400 rpm.

Still, the brute force of this baby’s 650 lb-ft arrives at 3,600 rpm, which is nearly 8 percent more peak force than the ZR1.

Of course, the key to GM’s new beast is the LT4’s new R1740 TVS 1.7L supercharger that spins at up to 20,150 rpm, according to GM, which is 5,000 rpm more than the 2.3L LS9 blower.

Like I said folks, this is one of hell of an engine, which is going to make the new Z06 one hell of a thrill to drive.
