Project Stingray: Gaming Performance Benchmarks
So now that we spent all this time building this expensive gaming PC, just how well does it perform with the top racing titles available today? To get some numbers, I fired up Project CARS, Assetto Corsa, Dirt Rally, Grid Autosport, Forza 6: Apex, and iRacing for comparison’s sake. For our testing, I cranked every single setting up to its absolute maximum, including anti-aliasing. If you are unfamiliar with AA, it’s a technique used to soften edges so you don’t get those awful jagged lines that show up around the straight edges of items on screens. It is extremely graphically demanding, and just this one setting can cut FPS numbers by as much as 80-percent!
I ran all my testing this way for two reasons. Firstly, I want to push Project Stingray to its absolute breaking point. Why build a rig like this if you never stress it to its maximum? Secondly, I want to provide an absolute worst case scenario for anyone looking to build a system like this. Rather than cherry pick settings to get a good-looking number, these are the absolute lowest numbers you will ever possibly see. That means that you know that regardless of what settings you want to play with, your FPS will never fall below that point. Personally, I think that kind of info is much more useful.
With that said, don’t freak out when you see some of the framerates in this video, especially with Project CARS. Without the AA settings turned up, Project CARS runs at an average of 80 FPS. And when we turn that AA up to its maximum? Well, you’ll just have to watch and see, but I promise it isn’t pretty.
The actual testing setup and procedure was pretty simple. I ran each game’s benchmark a minimum of five times at both 4K and 21:9/1440p, then averaged the numbers to get a solid sample size. I did this across five different system setups that included my old computer at base clocks and overclocked. I then did a single Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980Ti, the pair of 980Tis, and then I ran a set of numbers with the G1 980Tis overclocked.
As always, if you have any questions about the numbers or the games in the video, just hit the forum thread or comment on the YouTube video. I’ll be sure to read it and answer.
