Michelin Man Reminds Us of the Importance of Tire Safety

Our good friends at Michelin have reminded us that this week is Tire Safety Week! Tires are the most important items on your car, and they are something that most people don’t pay enough attention to. With a few basic periodic checks, your tires will be kept in tip-top shape for your next road trip.

Proper tire inflation is important and should be checked regularly. While a few pounds of pressure difference in a tire won’t make a huge difference to performance or handling, it could be making a huge difference to your fuel economy. Properly inflated tires help fuel economy, but they also help ensure that the tires have maximum grip while providing the best tread life.

You should also periodically check tire wear. It’s super easy to do, especially if you have a penny. Simply stick the penny, head down, into the tire tread. If you can see all of Mr. Lincoln’s head, it’s time to visit your local tire shop.

The Michelin Man has been promoting tire safety for decades, but I must admit he was kinda terrifying as a child. He had a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man thing going on. But now, the inflatable Michelin Man costume that we see at racetracks and auto shows is pretty cool. He’s a great conversation starter about the subject of tires and tire safety.
