Texas Mile

Ever wonder what it takes to enter the legendary Texas Mile run? Well, a piece we stumbled on about James Andrews might provide some insight.

The Kansas car collector will be taking his ‘94 ZR-1 Corvette — powered by a Lingenfelter-built engine — to the April event, as highlighted in a story by The Wichita Eagle.

The C4, however, is far from the typical ZR-1. In 1998, the 4-cam, 32-valve Lingenfelter Performance-built engine clocked a top speed of 218 mph while powering another Corvette ZR-1 in Road and Track magazine’s “Fastest Street Legal Cars in America” competition.

In fact, the ZR-1, which was driven by Mario Andretti in the R&T test, actually pulled off a higher speed than the $1.5 million McLaren F1. But it ran into a snafu with the emissions testing, which affected its “street legal” qualification due to a fouled plug.

As you can see in the video below, now Andrews’ has his mind set on his own records, like a top speed of 180 mph at the Texas Mile.
