If at first you don’t succeed, then try and try again. That motto certainly paid off for Larry Fisette, who had been trying to get his hands on this 1978 Corvette Pace Car for 27 years.

Fisette first heard about the special edition C3 while working as used car salesman at a Chevy dealership in Markesan, Wisconsin, according to a Super Chevy story. At the time, the Corvette Pace Car was being stored in a building not too far from the dealership. But the owner, Fred Mathwak, had no interest in selling the car, and never wavered on his stance.

It would take 27 years, after Mathwak willed the car to his grandson, for Fisette to finally see his dream come to life. And surprisingly, after spending nearly 40 years sitting in storage, the Corvette was still in good running condition.

“I didn’t even put gas in the carburetor,” Fisette told Super Chevy. “The car still had its original oil filter and spark plugs. We didn’t change any of that. The car didn’t overheat or do anything wrong, just worked.”

I guess you can say this was one Pace Car well worth the wait.
