What Was the First Corvette Advertisement You Remember?
Marketing is a huge part of today’s automotive industry, but back in the day, getting the word out was a bit different. This advertisement came out in 1955, a critical time for Corvette. The V8 had just been introduced, but with poor sales of the six-cylinder 1954 model, GM limited production to just 700 units for the ’55 model. 265 cubic inches worth of thundering V8 gave Chevrolet something to be proud of, and Chevrolet came up with this advertisement.
Evoking the emotion and excitement of pre-war cars, this ad attempts to portray the V8 Corvette as a rough and ready machine. It describes the engine as a “cyclone of sound” and road holding that “cannot be duplicated.” Attributes that can still be used in Corvette ads to this day.
For those of us in advanced years, this could have been the first stirring of the soul from the sight of a Corvette. For everyone else, we’d like to ask what was your first Corvette memory? Was it an advertisement in a car magazine? Was it a TV ad? Did you see one roaring down the street or around the corner of a race track?
