Earl’s Classic 327 Coupe Was Valued at $200,000 in Early 2016.
The name Harley Earl and Corvette have a rich history, to say the least. Not only is the former General Motors designer considered the father of the great American sports car, but he also owned some memorable models before he died in 1969, at the age of 75.
One was this white 1968 Corvette 327 coupe that’s believed to be the last vehicle commissioned for Mr. Earl. It’s currently being offered for sale by Vintage ‘Vettes of Kansas City, as highlighted in an AutoEvolution report.
Vintage ‘Vette’s spec sheet for the classic Corvette doesn’t list a price for the car, instead noting that you should call for pricing. But as recently as January 2016, Mecum Auctions estimated the car’s value at $200,000. So, chances are, Earl’s ’68 coupe could fetch a price of close to $300,000. In fact, in 2013, a ’63 Corvette once owned by Earl sold for a whopping $1.5 million at a Mecum auction in Chicago.
The ‘68 coupe being sold by Vintage ‘Vettes is equipped with a 300-horsepower V8 with a turbo-hydramatic transmission. It also features power brakes, power steering, and power windows, as well as a radio and air conditioner. But one of the Corvette’s most surprising features, given the period, is a speed warning indicator.
Imagine that, a speed indicator on a ‘Vette back in ’68. Although, given Harley Earl’s celebrity-like status as the father of the Corvette, he probably needed a little reminder at times to reign in the fun factor when driving the coupe.
