Stop Driving Your Corvette on Old Tires!
Do you have an older Corvette that you only drive on occasion? Does it still have the original tires? Then it’s time to take a look at your old tires, and seriously consider replacing them. They might have plenty of tread depth left, but if they are approaching more than a decade of age, there’s some serious danger present.
Through vulcanization, rubber has come a long way. It slows down the aging process of rubber to make it more durable. In recent years, we’ve seen modern versions of this technology that allow you to get 40,000, 60,000, and even 80,000 miles of use out of your tires. But 10 years is a long time for any tire. At that point, the rubber hardens, and you simply don’t have the grip of a new tire.
This has become an issue recently, and was thrust in front of us with the tragic passing of Paul Walker and Rod Rojas. The Carrera GT they were driving was on 10-year-old original tires. Aside from excessive speed, tires played a very big factor in the crash that killed them. So please, take some caution when it comes to running old tires. We like to drive in a spirited way, so it’s worthwhile to back that up with proper tires.
