MotorWeek Tests C7 Corvette Grand Sport on Road, Track, and Strip
MotorWeek has been around long enough to know that when a name from the past is brought back again, it needs to fill the shoes of that old model. That’s exactly the case with the Corvette Grand Sport. Known for being the track-oriented model, the Grand Sport name now slides between the Stingray and the new Z06. Prices, starting at about $66,000, reflect that too.
On paper it sounds promising. The Z06’s wider body and suspension components are carried over, as is the sticky rubber and brakes. But you still get the Stingray’s LT1 engine. The theory behind this is that you can use more of the power, more of the time. The dry-sump system for the engine is carried over from the Z51 package and keeps oil pressure up when those high lateral g-forces are being applied.
Things translate well from paper to the pavement, with excellent road manners and even better track capability. 0-60 times are just a tick under 4 seconds, and the 1/4 mile is dealt with in just over 12. But the real thing you want to know about is how it handles the twisty stuff. Summit Point Motorsport Park is a fantastic environment for the GS, and the Z07 package with ceramic brakes make for easy work of the circuit. MotorWeek didn’t provide any numbers on that side of things, but you can be sure that it is the most capable ‘Vette yet.
